Bringing Lessons from Canada to Australia’s Cannabis Future

From the green fields of British Columbia to South Australia’s Golden Days, Angus Murray shares his cultivation journey.

The flower that flows from British Columbia, known colloquially as BC Bud, is often considered Canada’s pinnacle achievement in cannabis cultivation. Globally renowned, its reputation comes not only from its place of origin and climate, but also from decades of committed locals who dared to become experts in the art of cannabis cultivation. Anyone who has spent time in Canada (particularly in BC) and sampled expertly grown, perfectly cured bud will tell you it’s a privilege to experience.

After moving to Vancouver, Aussie cultivator Angus Murray spent time with seasoned growers, honing his craft and embracing Canada’s more open lifestyle and non-judgemental view of cannabis use. As he notes, “everyone in Vancouver knows [BC Bud is] really special.” While Canada has taken a more progressive stance through reform and regulation, it hasn’t been perfect - and the search for a model that truly serves all who want to engage with cannabis is ongoing.

Australia, however, hasn’t lost all of its cultivators to the northern hemisphere. Despite working with two reputable Canadian companies, Murray chose to return home and after working with Cann Group, now grows with Golden Days in South Australia. Their first harvest is in progress right now and the results are promising.

With a “plant-first” attitude, Murray remains committed to helping cannabis “express its genetics as best as possible.” His approach, shaped by both Canadian and Australian experience, represents the potential for Australia to evolve its own cannabis culture.
